Sad
Facial lines and wrinkles don’t just add years to your appearance. Depending on their location and severity, these signs of aging can also make you look sad. When such lines and wrinkles give you a permanent frown or your mouth a downward appearance, people might easily assume that you’re sad even when you’re not.
If someone has mentioned that you look sad or tired (even when you feel otherwise), it could be due to certain lines and wrinkles. Sags and folds, particularly those around the mouth, can alter your facial expressions and make you look a little unhappy or upset even when your face is at rest.
Saddened look in the lower face
The frown lines between the eyebrows (angry 11s) are not the only ones that can give your face a sad or an angry look. The saddened appearance is also due to lines and folds that are commonly formed in the mouth or lower face area. This is especially true for those that give the face a downturned expression. These include:
- Nasolabial folds – These are indented or deep lines that run from the edges of the nose to the corners of the mouth. They are also referred to as laugh lines or smile lines, as they become more visible when you smile or make certain facial expressions. Nasolabial folds are very common, but their severity or prominence can vary.
Everyone develops a fold when smiling, but it can deepen over time. Nasolabial folds can become more prominent or pronounced because of certain factors like sun exposure and smoking. They may also become saggier with age due to the natural depletion of collagen and elastin. As these folds deepen, marionette lines can develop.
- Marionette lines – These are vertical lines that go straight from corners of the mouth down to the chin. Marionette lines are more common over the age of 40, but can also appear sooner due to a number of factors. They can make the corners of the mouth look downturned and give the lower face a bit of a saggy appearance.
Aging is the main reason why people develop marionette lines. This is because of the depletion of facial tissues and the loss of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin. Gravity is another culprit, as it causes the face to stretch downward. Habits like smoking and sun exposure can increase your risk of developing marionette lines.
Combined folds and lines
Having nasolabial folds and marionette lines can make you look sad or tired even when you’re not. They can betray your age and give the face a saggy appearance. While both are not medical conditions, they can be an aesthetic issue for some people. This is especially true when they are deep or overly pronounced.
