SHR Hair Reduction

Want to unveil smooth, flawless skin without having to shave or wax? Super Hair Reduction (SHR) uses low but rapid pulses of energy to target the pigment and stem cells responsible for hair growth. This light-based technology allows the skin to be heated gently, which then delivers a safe and comfortable hair reduction treatment. SHR is suitable for all skin types and hair colors, especially Asian ones.

What is Super Hair Reduction (SHR)?

SHR is a light-based technology that provides safe, fast, and pain-free hair reduction treatment. It uses 50% of the energy to target the pigment and the other 50% to target the stem cells responsible for hair growth. Developed by Alma Lasers, SHR enables gradual heating, which translates to less damage or irritation on the skin. This also makes it suitable for all skin types and tones, even sensitive skin.

SHR features the use of AFT™ or Advanced Fluorescence Technology, which is a light filter that converts unnecessary or unused wavelengths into useful energy. This allows the delivery of low energy into the hair follicles, resulting in a virtually pain-free and effective treatment.

How does SHR work?

SHR combines low fluence laser pulses and contact cooling. It uses concentrated light beams that target and heat the pigment (or melanin in the hair) and the stem cells, destroying the follicles with gradual heat buildup. Instead of delivering high-intensity energy shots, it scans the treatment area and gradually heats the site with repetitive application energy until the follicle is damaged and destroyed.

SHR also uses the comfortable In-Motion technique. This means that instead of the handpiece being held still, the applicator is moved around which enables gradual heat-buildup for increased patient comfort. It carries no risk of burning the skin and has a high success rate in permanently reducing or removing hair.

FAQs

What are the benefits of SHR technology?

  • Gentler on the skin (than standard laser or IPL treatments)
  • Can target melanin and stem cells responsible for hair growth
  • Can be used on tanned skin and patients with darker skin type
  • Can treat finer and lighter hairs
  • Faster and virtually pain-free

What are the treatable areas?

Almost any area can be treated, including the:

  • Face (beard, upper lip)
  • Underarms
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Bikini
  • Brazilian/Boyzilian

Is SHR safe?

SHR is safe for all skin types and can treat all types of hair. It can treat lighter colored hairs, but these may need more sessions for optimal results. SHR can also be used on tanned skin, but we strongly recommend that you don’t undergo tanning at the time of or during your treatment.

Is the procedure painful?

The low-heat setting and In-Motion technology used in SHR contribute to a comfortable hair reduction treatment. The low and gentle pulses of energy also keep skin trauma and discomfort at a minimum.

Do the treated hair follicles grow back?

SHR treats hair follicles in the active growth stage. These are permanently damaged and should not grow back, but hair follicles that were not in said stage will still have to be treated. There are also instances where patients can see fine hairs after the initial treatment due to hormonal fluctuations (in pregnancy, menopause, stress, or changes in medications). Touch-up treatments are recommended.

What can you expect after the procedure?

As hair grows in various cycles, repeat treatments are needed to effectively disable the hair growth. The number of sessions required will also vary from patient to patient and depend on various factors, such as:

  • Hair color (lighter hairs will require more sessions)
  • Hair volume and thickness
  • Skin tone
  • Treatment sites or areas
  • Hormones (or medications)

How many SHR treatments do you need?

Between 6 and 10 eight sessions (at intervals of 4 to 8 weeks) is the general recommendation. This is to effectively target and disable hairs in the active growth stage. Those who have hormonal imbalances may need more sessions.
